I received an email this morning from a Graduate Studies Coordinator at a very prominent school for my field. It was a quasi-mass-mailer, congratulating me on a recent scholarship accomplishment (which did not apply to me) and noting that I was discovered through the Graduate Student Research Showcase I had recently participated in.
I followed up on the email with a thank you, a clarification, and my expression of interest in their graduate program. About thirty minutes later I received the following email:
"____ would like to recall the message, "Congratulations from ___"."Huh? Was my inquiry no longer welcome? Were the 'Congratulations' recalled as well? How should I regard this school moving forward? It was all a rather strange violation of social practices.
But not to fear...about 30 minutes after that, I received the original email, again. This time it congratulated me, just for being me – no scholarship accolades required!
Heh.
